Flowers
John Singer Sargent, the 19th-century American portrait painter, was reported to have remarked that in order to arrive at good flesh tones, the student would be wise to study flowers and their ephemeral nuances of value, hue and chroma. Flowers are highly amenable to interpretation, and consequently pose a formidable challenge to the conceptual and organizational skills of the painter.
