Painting The Figure

Following completion of requisite drawing study, the student begins to work directly from the live model and from his or her figure drawing studies. When working from life, the advanced student begins to paint using any variation of two essential methods. The first method is to transfer a line drawing onto a ground and then begin laying in the dead coloring, followed by an "ebauche", striving to obtain good value and color relationships. A variation on this first approach allows for use of an indirect method. The second method is to draw directly with the brush and boldly define the principal volumes in an overstated conceptual manner, followed by more precise articulation. Emphasis is placed on achieving not only good flesh tones but also a believable quality in their representation.
