When students have learned to analyze master painting in terms of essential color, they can efficiently make the transition to "working" the paint pieces more organically. They are guided through the separate steps of painting, learning what to do and what not to do at each stage in order to avoid that all-too-familiar, slick, melting plastic, wax-museum look in favor of a more traditional, learned appearance. Regardless if one is painting in one session or a number of sessions, failure to learn the differences between the stages of painting is one of the chief reasons that much of today's painting displays the lack of surface vitality always present in beautiful painting, despite the many different guises in which it appears.
